I need to share something very important about me.

I was a lousy franchise owner. That’s because I knew how to (for the most part) do things better than them.

Which caused me to have some resentments.

I resented the fact that I had to pay them monthly marketing fees. (Because their marketing didn’t work.) It made me angry to pay royalties on what I earned as a franchisee. (Because the franchise organization I was with was starting to suck.)

My father, (who forced encouraged me to join his franchise consulting firm) had been angry with them long before I entered the room as a franchisee. But still, he thought that it would be a great opportunity to use some of my better skills; like sales, consulting, public speaking, and the artful use of the schmooze.

For awhile, being a franchise broker/consultant was a great fit for me. It allowed me to use my top skills. And I knew franchising from a management point of view, having come from a career in automobile franchise sales and management.

My role as a franchisee of a national brokerage firm enabled me to help lots of people become franchise owners. It also allowed me to hone some of my top skills. I’m very grateful that my dad gave me the opportunity. Unfortunately, we lost my dad to Cancer in 2007. He knew that I was thinking of going out on my own, and he said, “Joel, you don’t need them anymore. Just go do it.” So I did. You’ll learn more about my story in the book.

Over the years, I’ve learned a few things about what it takes to become a successful franchise owner. I know how to identify people who are right for franchise ownership. I also know how to identify people who shouldn’t even bother typing in “franchise opportunities,” on Google, because they would fail miserably as franchise owners.

In Become a Franchise Owner!, Joel takes the guesswork out of buying a franchise by setting the record straight in an easy-to-understand way. The book takes the reader on a journey of discovery…about one’s self, about franchising, and whether they are meant for each other.”- Barbara Weltman, Host of Build Your Business Radio

This book is about you. It’s about your future. It’s about building equity in what you do, as opposed to slaving away building equity for someone else. They don’t care about you.

That’s right; the sooner you face the fact that most jobs these days are of the temporary nature, the sooner you’ll be able to take your professional life back. Do you think I’m being overly dramatic? Really? I’ve worked, (and still do) with hundreds of people who thought that their bosses…their companies-cared about them. Maybe I should mention that 95% of the people I work with are unemployed. You see, they used to be employed by companies that they thought cared about them. Are you starting to pick up what I’m putting down, here?

If you’re an employee, it means that you have a boss. And your boss has a boss. And that boss sometimes puts heat on your boss to perform better. In turn, there’s what I call a heat transfer that starts to take place. If you’re the employee that’s the object of that heat, and you can’t do a better job at whatever is being asked of you, you can get fired. It’s not like your boss is going to fire himself. Right? It’s kind of hard to believe that your boss would take care of himself, (or herself) before you, isn’t it?

My point is this; if you want to be in charge of your career…your life, you have to find a way to become the boss. There’s just no other way to do it. (Besides winning a lottery, getting a huge inheritance, or doing something illegal, like robbing a bank, or scamming some senior citizens out of their money.)

If you’re at the point in which you’re ready to at least look at some other options besides traditional employment, this book’s for you.

You’ll learn;

  • How to determine if franchise business ownership is for you

  • How to go about customizing your search for some great franchises

  • How to research those franchises, perfectly

  • How to lower your risk, make money, and own what you do

One more little thing;

There’s a chance that those that are in the franchise industry won’t like some of things that I’ve chosen to reveal in my book.
